Continuing your education in Ontario

If you are over the age of 21, there are special language training courses that can help you finish your Ontario Secondary School Diploma. You can apply for full-time, part-time, summer or evening programs.

Some courses will help you improve your language skills for daily life, while others will help you with your studies at secondary school, college, or university. If you have a high level of language fluency, you may be able to take courses that will help you with business presentation and communication skills. There are also literacy classes to help you if you cannot read or write.

To be accepted into college or university you may be asked to take a language test. For example, many colleges and universities use the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). If you are applying for programs taught in French, you may be required to complete a test of French language proficiency.

Many universities and colleges across Ontario offer language training programs. These programs may be full-time or part-time, credit or non-credit. You will usually be charged a fee. University or college language training courses may be offered through a continuing education department, a specialized language institute, or an academic faculty.

University and college language training helps you to improve your language skills for your profession or further study.
